    Deuteronomy chapters 10 to 27 – Study Guide
    10:1-11 – Moses reviews his second time on the mountain. He states that the second tablets containing the Ten Commandments were now in what place? (v. 5; see Hebrews 9:4)
    10:12-22 – God’s great requirements. Compare 6:5; Matthew 22:37. Notice the description of Yahweh (the LORD) in v. 17, 18. Compare the description of Jesus in Revelation 19:16.
    11:1-32 – Exhortations.
    11:1 – The key requirement.
    11:10-12 – How Egypt and Canaan differ.
    11:13-17 – The stipulation and the promise.
    11:18-21 – Passing the torch to the children.
    11:26-32 – Blessings from Mt. Gerizim and curses from Mt. Ebal (see chapters 27-28).
    12:1-32 – Worship in the place God will choose (5-7, 13-14). A reminder (16, 23, 24). The danger (29-31). What to do and what not to do (32).
    13:1-5 – Dealing with false prophets.
    13:6-11 – Dealing with secret idolaters.
    13:12-18 – Dealing with town that have turned to idolatry.
    14:1-21 – Clean and unclean animals. Cf. Leviticus 11.
    14:22-29 – Tithing of the product of the fields. Instructions for every third year.
    15:1-11 – No being “hard-hearted or tight-fisted” (7, 8).
    15:1-18 – Freedom for Hebrew slaves in the seventh year. What was to be done should a slave want to stay with his/her master?
    16:1-17 – The Passover, Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), and Festival of Booths (Tabernacles).
    16:18-20 – The administration of justice.
    17:2-7 – Executing an idolater. What witnesses are required? Who should cast the first stone?
    17:7-13 – Decisions in difficult cases.
    17:14-20 – Standards for any future king of Israel. What must he not do? What should be his guide as a ruler? Sadly, regarding Solomon as king, see 1 Kings 10:26, 28; 17:1-8.
    18:1-8 – The portion of the priests and Levites.
    18:9-14 – Canaanite practices forbidden.
    18:15-22 – A prophet like Moses. The basis for a Messianic expectation (see Acts 3:22-26; 7:37; John 6:14; 7:40). What was the test to be applied to a supposed prophet?
    19:1-13 – Cities of refuge. See also Numbers 35:9ff.
    19:14-21 – Boundary markers and false witnesses.
    20:1-20 – Laws dealing with war. Those excused from combat (5-8). Extreme treatment of Canaanite cities (16-18). For what reason? What must not be destroyed in a siege?
    21:1-9 – Dealing with a murder when the killer is not known.
    21:10-14 – Marrying a captive woman.
    21:15-17 – Firstborn son, but born of the “unloved” or “disliked” wife.
    21:18-21 – Dealing with a stubborn and rebellious son.
    21:22,23 – Dealing with a body hanging on a tree. Compare John 19:33 and Galatians 3:13.
    22:1-4 – Regarding dealing with a neighbor’s property.
    22:5-12 – Incidental laws.
    22:5 – Clothing and gender.
    22:6-7 – The mother bird and her young.
    22:8 – Home safety measures re the flat roof of a dwelling (space used in various ways)
    22:9-11 – Avoiding the mixing of categories. Why? A matter of holiness distinction?
    Compare 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
    22:13-30 – Laws relating to sexual relationships.
    22:13-21 – Slander or not in a marriage to a “virgin.”
    22:22-24 – adulterers.
    22:25-29 – rape of betrothed or not betrothed women.
    23:1-9 – Those excluded from the assembly of Israel.
    23:7, 8 – Reasons given that Edomites and Egyptians should be admitted.
    23:10-14 – Sanitation in the camp.
    23:15-25 – Various laws.
    23:15, 16 – Regarding a slave who has escaped from a foreign people.
    23:17, 18 – Temple prostitution forbidden.
    23:19-21 – No interest on loans to a fellow Israelite.
    23:21-23 – Keeping vows. A problem in Jesus’ day (see Matthew 23:16-22).
    23:24, 25 – In a neighbor’s field. A practice by Jesus’ disciples (Matt. 12:1; Luke 6:1).
    24:1-4 – Divorce and remarriage. Jesus’ teaching on this matter: Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:3-9).
    24:6 – That which was essential to life was not to be taken in pledge.
    24:7 – Kidnaping.
    24:10-13 – Thoughtfulness in regard to pledges.
    24:14-15 – Paying the wages of a daily laborer. Note James 5:4.
    24:16 – Individual responsibility. Consider Ezekiel 18, esp. v. 19, 20.
    24:19-22 – Leaving some harvest for the disadvantaged. cf. Ruth chapter 2.
    25:1-3 – Forty lashes but no more. Regarding Paul, 2 Corinthians 11:24.
    25:4 – Concern for the animal at work. See Paul’s application: 1 Cor. 9:6-10; 1 Tim. 5:17, 18.
    25:5-10 – Brother-in-law (“levirate”) marriage. See in Gen. 38:6-7 and Ruth 3:12-4:12 (note variations). Used in an attempt against Jesus, Matt. 22:23-33.
    25:11 – Drastic punishment.
    25:12-16 – Honest weights and measures.
    25:17-19 – The Amalekites to be blotted out. King Saul ordered to carry out the “herem” or ban (1 Samuel 15:1-3).
    26:1-15 – The presentation of the first fruits in Canaan. Note the description of Jacob in v. 5.
    26:16-19 – The agreement or covenant between God and Israel. What kind of people are they to be?
    27:1-10 – The stones to be set up on Mount Ebal in Canaan.
    27:11-14 – The arrangement on Mount Gerizim, the mount of blessings, and Mount Ebal, the mount of curses.
    27:15-26 – The curses agreed to at Mount Ebal.
