    1 CHRONICLES 19 TO 29 AND 2 CHRONICLES 1 TO 8 – STUDY GUIDE

19:1-19 – King Hanun of the Ammonites grossly offends messengers David sent to him in good faith. The result is war between Israel and Ammon. The Ammonites hire military help
from the Arameans (v. 6). Joab and his brother Abishai successfully defeat the combined forces. David then leads in combat against combined Aramean forces and after he defeats them peace is made and the Amareans become subject to David (v. 16-19).
20:1-3 – Joab successfully leads Israel’s army against the Ammonites and their capital Rabbah.
“But David remained at Jerusalem” – the chronicler omits that this was the time that David committed adultery with Bathsheba, with long-ranging consequences (see 2 Samuel 11,12).
    20:4-8 – War with Philistines.
21:1-22:1 – David orders a census of Israel, over Joab’s objection, apparently for military purposes. David chooses three days pestilence as the punishment for this act of pride. The pestilence is stayed at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. David buys the threshing floor and, as commanded, builds an altar and offers sacrifices. This is later the location for the temple built by Solomon (2 Chr. 3:1).
22:2-7 – David gathers materials for the construction of the temple.
22:6-19 – David charges Solomon to build the temple, giving God’s reasons why David himself is not building it and underlining God’s covenant with the house of David. Note v. 13. The leaders of Israel are ordered to help Solomon with the project (v. 17-19).
23:1 – A statement re Solomon’s choice to replace David as king. There is more about this in chapters 28 and 29. The chronicler omits the conflict over succession recorded in 1 Kings chapters 1 and 2.
23:2-32 – The arrangements and duties of the Levites in the temple service. With the building of the temple some duties of the Levites will change (v. 25,26ff).
24:1-31 – The organization of the priests, descendants of Aaron, for service at the temple.
Notice that there are 24 divisions of priests for service (perhaps in two week shifts) chosen by lot.
25:1-31 – Arrangements for music in the temple, a matter of great interest to David.
26:1-19 – Arrangements for temple gatekeepers. One view of their duties: “They guarded the avenues that led to it (i.e. the temple); they opened and shut the outer gates; they were charged to keep decorum among the worshipers; they turned back those who were unclean; and they guarded against thieves and any enemies”(HSBfn). Note the qualifications (v.6,7,8). 26:20-28 – The arrangements for the treasuries of the temple, including dedicated gifts and valuables won in battle.
26:29-32 – Officers and judges dealing with affairs in the kingdom.
27:1-15 — Officers over the standing army.
27:16-24 – Rulers or governors over the tribes of Israel. Notice that all Israel is meant, not just Judah.
27:25-31 – The managers or stewards of David’s own possessions.
27:32-34 – David’s cabinet ministers. Ahithophel was replaced after he sided with Absalom’s rebellion and then committed suicide (2 Samuel 17:23).
28:1-8 – David informs his followers of God’s choice of Solomon as his successor and temple builder.
28:9-21 – David’s charge to Solomon and the plans for the temple as given by God, with encouragement to boldness and action.
29:1-9 – David encourages the people to give willingly and freely towards the temple.
29:10-22a – David’s prayer before the assembly. The offering of sacrifices.
29:22b-25 – Solomon’s enthronement. “A second time” seems to indicate that there had been an earlier anointing in the face of Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne (1 Kings 1,2).
29:26-30 – The death of David.

2 CHRONICLES describes the reign of Solomon (chapters 1-9), leaving out his negative actions, then after the division of the kingdom follows the kings of Judah one by one, giving greatest attention to the ones who were most loyal to God.

1:1-13 – Solomon’s prayer and God’s gift of wisdom and wealth.
1:14- 17 – Solomon’s chariots and horses and trade with other nations. Cf. Deut. 17:16.
2:1-16 – Preparations for building the temple. The help of King Huram (Hiram) of Tyre sought.
2:17,18 – The conscription of resident aliens as laborers.
3:1-17 – Construction of the temple: its site, size, and materials. 4:1-22 – The furnishing of the temple.
5:1 – The temple is completed. The building took seven years to complete (see 1 Kings 6:37,38).
5:2-14 – The ark of the covenant is brought into the temple. The glory of the LORD filled the house.
6:1-11 – Solomon addresses the assembly of Israel.
    6:12-42 – Solomon’s prayer of dedication.
7:1-22 – God’s answer to Solomons prayer: fire from heaven and the glory of the LORD filling the house (1-3); sacrifices are offered and there is a seven day festival (4-10); God’s appearance to Solomon in the night and His promise (note the provisional “if” in v. 14,17)(11-18); God’s warning against disobedience (19-22).
    8:1-10 – Solomon’s other building projects.
8:11 – A palace for his Egyptian princess.
8:12-18 – Offerings made. Ships to Ophir, importing gold. The location of Ophir is not known with certainty: southern Arabia? The African coast (Somalia)? India?
